It was because I did not have the CA root certificate installed and trusted on my mac correctly. The Lync server is using a self-signed cert from the in-house companies Root CA. You have to export the Root CA from the Lync server, then Double-click to install it. It should launch keychain access. When it asks, select 'always trust'. At that point it is not completely trusted, it only selects X.509. You have to right-click the cert, click 'get-info', then click 'Trust', then choose 'Always Trust' on the first field.
